NO F’ING KALE!

NO F’ING KALE!

Activated Almonds. Kale. Acai bowls. Coconut water. Tumeric Lattes

5 or 10 years ago, how many of these ingredients were you aware of?

Every second day there’s a news article or Insta influencer spruiking the benefits of the latest and greatest superfood. It’s exhausting to keep up

So do they work and should you care?

Sure, sometimes new fad ingredients might be pleasant to eat from time to time. If you truly love eating kale, more power to you. But ‘super foods’ can be expensive, hard to cook with and frankly, many don’t taste great.

You Need Real Nutrition

The most important thing when it comes to your diet is making sure that you get the right amount of nutrients in a balanced manner.

This means eating simple, wholesome foods which are largely unprocessed. If you get that right, you’ll feel and look amazing.

The five main nutrient groups that you need for your body to function right are fats, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and an abundunce of mixed green vegtables. Your body doesn’t care whether you get them from a superfood or the humble veggie, as long as you are consuming a good intake of which ever you choose.

Fats come from fatty or oily foods. A simple diet will include plenty of these, as you can consume fats from red meats, oily fish like salmon and nuts. Other good sources of healthy fats include things like seeds, butter and avocado. Foods that are deep fried or highly processed should be avoided as these have no nutritional benefits.

Vitamins and minerals are found in all sorts of different foods. Again, they are found in much higher concentrations in natural, unprocessed foods like fresh fruit and vegetables.

Proteins traditionally come from meat and other animal products. While you can get some of your daily protein requirements from plant-based products, most plants don’t contain a complete protein – which your muscles need to function. However, eating a variety of plant and animal produce will ensure that you get enough high-quality protein in your diet – without having to eat any f’ing kale!

Carbohydrates are the last, and possibly the most important nutrient group. While most foods contain carbs, different foods have different quality carbs. Highly processed foods usually contain carbs with low nutritional value, and these are often turned straight into fat. Go for things like whole grains and fresh fruit to get your daily carb needs healthily.

The KISS Principle – Keep It Simple, Stupid

Ultimately, the key to living a healthy lifestyle and developing a good diet is keeping it simple. The easier you make eating well, the more likely you are to stick to it.

Here at the Daley Fuel, we like to think of humble veggies like broccoli and proteins like chicken as superfoods. Why? Because they fuel your body, taste great, and you don’t have to hunt them down at your local health food store.

And that’s super.
